The Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway offers a quaint drive through the NC Mountains with several stopping points along the way to hike and explore. The scenic roadway stretches from the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Smokey Mountain National Park in North Carolina.
Through the areas of Ashe County NC and Boone NC, there are several excellent mountain hiking opportunities. The Jumpingoff Rocks Trail, located at milepost 260.3, is an easy one mile hike to mountain vistas. The Lump Trail, just up the road at milepost 264.4 is also rated an easy hike and is only 0.3 mile. The Cascades Trail is rated a moderately difficult 0.5 hike but is very much worth the trip. At the end of the hike are several steps leading to an amazing waterfall. Don’t forget your camera; you’ll have to take pictures home for anyone to believe you about this tremendous mountain waterfall. The Cascades are located at mile marker 271.9.
The next trail is the Tompkins Knob Trail at mile marker 272.5. This easy 0.6 mile trail leads to the old Jesse Brown Cabin where you will want to take pictures and explore. As you travel from Deep Gap to Blowing Rock, there are several turning off spots to get out and stretch your legs and take advantage of a photo opportunity.
The real hiking begins at mile marker 294 with the many trails of Moses Cone Memorial Park. The park boasts 25 miles of marked hiking trails with staggering mountain views and quaint wooded trails offering an abundance of Blue Ridge Parkway attractions. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers an excellent way to experience the NC Mountains.
