Grayson Highland
Grayson Highlands State Park is located in the Jefferson National Forest, adjoining the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The park features many trails perfect for the avid hiker or for casual walkers. All trails in the Grayson Highlands State Park are open to hikers with many also open to horseback riders, mountain bikers and cross country skiers. The Cabin Creek Trail is a 1.9 mile loop that is fantastic for the novice hiker. The trail runs alongside a noisy stream to a magnificent 25 foot waterfall. Wilson Creek Trail, 1.8 mile mountain trail, also features a grand 25+ foot mountain waterfall and is rated at a moderate degree of difficulty.

If you are looking for panoramic views, the Twin Pinnacle Trail is a 1.6 mile hiking trail that is rated easy but does have a brief, steep segment near the top. When you reach the pinnacle, you will be at over 5,000 feet and be able to see for miles on a clear day. The Rhododendron Trail, named for the multitude of Rhododendron’s that thickets Grayson Highlands State Park, is rated a moderate degree of difficulty and stretches 1 mile into the park. The Rock House Trail is an easy to moderate hike thru large boulders and features 2 log cabins, an old springhouse and a cane mill that was used to make molasses in the olden days.

Other trails include the Wilburn Branch Trail, named after a legendary bear and wolf hunter of the 1800’s, the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, the Listening Rock Trail, and the Stampers Branch Trail. While on your hike be sure to keep an eye out for arrowheads and Indian artifacts, as this mountain was home to many Native Americans. Don’t forget your camera, Grayson Highlands State Park has infinite photo opportunities from the amazing views to exceptional wildflowers to an occasional wild pony.
