For the more adventurous, the Rhododendron Trail is a more demanding 1.1 mile self-guided NC mountain Hike. On a clear day, you can see the historic New River from this NC hiking Trail. The huge rock formations and large trees make this NC Hiking excursion a must for avid hikers.

Don’t forget to pack hamburgers and hot dogs because after the hike, you’ll want to fire up the grill and enjoy a cookout at the picnic area. There are 19 picnic tables and 8 grills along with an additional handicap accessible shelter with an additional larger grill, fireplace and water fountain.

The history of the mountain holds many legends. The mountain’s name until 1952 was Panther Mountain. Legend has it that a child was attacked and killed on the mountain by a black panther. The name was changed in 1952 and the mountain was named after Thomas Jefferson and his father. Both owned land in the area and done survey work near the North Carolina and Virginia state line. Another legend about the mountain tells that runaway slaves used to hide under the rock overhang caves while escaping on the Underground Railroad. In 1956, Mount Jefferson was designated a state park and now serves as an excellent NC mountain hiking and picnicking area for both tourists and locals.
