With more than 400 miles of hiking trails, the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is a Virginia hiker’s dream. Mount Rogers features a 64 mile portion of the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail is the longest trail continuous, marked hiking trail in the world and winds thru 14 states, stretching from Georgia to Maine. Mount Rogers also encompasses 17 miles of the Virginia Creeper Trail which runs 35 miles along the old railroad bed from Abingdon, Virginia to Whitetop, Virginia at the North Carolina line.

Experienced hikers enjoy the Mount Rogers Trail which stretches 6.2 miles (one way) to the peak of Mount Rogers and is rated moderate to difficult. Once on the peak, you can tell your friends back home that you hiked to the highest peak in the Virginia Mountains at over 5,700 feet. If you’re not so adventurous, the Lovers Leap trail is an easy .5 mile hike to amazing long-range views off Whitetop Mountain.

The Whitetop Laurel Trail is also an easy 0.5 mile track to fishing waters. Fantastic Virginia Mountain and stream views can be seen from the Wilson Creek Trail which is rated difficult and stretches about a mile.

Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is home to many types of wildlife. Several species of bird are common including owls, hawks and several songbirds. Other wildlife includes occasional black bear, fox, coyote and bobcat sightings along with frequent white-tail deer, raccoons, opossum and squirrels. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is also home to a herd of wild ponies. From the amazing views and natural wildlife to the scores of maintained hiking trails, the Virginia Mountains are sure to please.
