New River Trail
The New River Trail State Park is a 57 mile trail that runs from Grayson County Virginia thru Carroll and Wythe Counties and ends up in Pulaski County Virginia. Like the Virginia Creeper Trail, the New River Trail was also built as part of the “rails for trails” campaign to turn old, abandoned railroad beds into hiking trails for the public to enjoy. Our New River North Carolina Cabin Rentals are located in Ashe County and are nearby to West Jefferson, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Blowing Rock, Boone and all of your favorite High Country Attractions.
The trail features Virginia hiking, biking and horseback riding. The well maintained trail meanders along side the historic New River for 39 miles providing Virginia visitors with all the beauty and atmosphere that is the Virginia Mountains. The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world and one of only a couple that run North instead of South.
The New River Trail features several bridges and trestles to cross on your Virginia hiking experience. The Hiwasee Bridge is 951 feet tall, the Ivanhoe Bridge is 670 feet tall and the Fries Junction Bridge is a gigantic 1,089 feet tall. There are also two tunnels; one that is 135 feet long and the other is 193 feet long.
Another attraction to take in while at the New River Trail State Park is the Shot Tower Historical State Park. The Shot Tower is a 75 foot building that was used to make firearms for the settlers over 200 years ago. The park offers a gift shop to pick up mementos of your trip at Cliffview and Foster Falls. As always, don’t forget the camera, these will be memories of the Virginia Mountains that you will cherish for years to come.
